A Series of Ramblings

Blogging when I remember to

You’re probably not watching enough anime. No, seriously.

A lot of people who aren’t super close to me don’t realize just how much anime I’ve watched over the last few years. Which is quite a bit, but honestly still nowhere near as much as a few friends of mine. But I have seen quite a bit. And I’m here to say if you watch anime, and you’re waiting for dubs for a series, you’re not watching enough. And if you’re only watching things that air on US television, you’re definitely not watching enough anime. And that’s truly to your detriment.

I’m not religious. But I don’t hate religious people.

I don’t believe in a god. I do think Jesus sounds like a cool guy. A wanderer, encouraging peace and goodwill towards others, hanging out with the outcasts of society, turning water into wine? Sounds like my kind of guy. As far as the whole son of God thing…. ehh, maybe. I don’t know, I wasn’t there. The Buddha had some interesting teachings. And I like the religions that are polytheistic (I’m sure there’s a Hindu god of sweets). I don’t follow or believe in any of these religions though. That sure as hell doesn’t make me any better or worse than someone who does.

Why the “Nerd Girl” needs to die

I hate the term “gamer girl”. I hate “nerd girl”, “geek chick”, “nerdette” or any combo of nerd-related word plus term used to describe women. And if you call yourself any of these things, well, I probably don’t like you much either. I play video games, and I don’t have a penis. These things have nothing to do with each other. There are many reasons I hate any of the “nerd girl” stereotypes. Especially the “hot nerd girl” ones. Because yes, I like being boiled down to the fact that I have tits and read comic books. Oh boy, I sure do love that.

Kanye West: The struggle between man and celebrity

I read a review not long after Yeezus came out that said there were two sides to Kanye, the man and the celebrity. I however argue there are three sides to him: the musician, a brilliant and experimental producer whose lyrics have helped set off a new world of rap; the celebrity, a self-centered madman who will do what he wants, when he wants, regardless of anyone else; and the man, someone whose very existence we’re not sure of at times, but he’s there. You can tell the man loves his family, and cares about inequality and injustice; you can tell the musician wants to bring rap to a higher art form, away from the “hoodrat” stereotype common in 1990s rap; you know the celebrity, his antics making the news worldwide.

Heroes of Cosplay is bad, and Syfy should feel bad

(Formerly on a different site)

Maybe you heard about this show Syfy has started showing called Heroes of Cosplay. If you do cosplay, or enjoy the works of cosplayers, then odds are this show isn’t for you. If you have no clue what cosplay is, this show still isn’t for you. Actually, this show is really for no one, and you shouldn’t be giving Syfy the ad revenue. What, praytell, is Heroes of Cosplay you ask? On the surface, it’s a documentary/reality TV show, following several cosplayers and the “famous” Yaya Han, as they work through costumes, go to conventions, enter competitions, and try to earn fame and glory for themselves. I know, that doesn’t sound too bad, right? Within the first 15 minutes, I was already disgusted by what I was seeing. None of the cosplayers shown “cosplay for fun”, instead cosplaying mostly to enter contests, earn money, and further their own fame/brand name. Many of them had significant others who helped them out to the point of being sweatshop workers (Jinyo doing all the embroidery comes heavily to mind). The show stated that many cosplayers spend months of work and thousands of dollars to enter competitions with money on the line.

I don’t know what you think, but that couldn’t be less true 90% of the time if it tried.

The search for less of the same…

(Formerly on another site)

With Microsoft’s recent announcement that the Xbox One would no longer require the new Kinect to be attached to function, I as a consumer cheered. Gone are the draconian “daily check in” requirements, the unclearly outlined used games policy, and now the Kinect requirement. As a consumer, this is amazing! Microsoft listened to its fanbase (I mean preorder numbers and possible loss of sales), and is trying to fix what it can to make you, me, us, the end users, happier! This is a win! Now just sell it to me sans Kinect for $400! It’ll be great!

As someone who craves difference and uniqueness, I weep. Sure, the initial Xbox One MS tried to sell me on was odd, had features I didn’t care about (oh boy, I can yell at my TV to change the channel), and was pricier, but I had to hand it to MS for at least trying to be different. I still feel some of the features they wanted will be rolled out over the years, once the base is already installed. It’s a much better plan, to add one of those features in every so often, instead of trying to do it all at once. But now, well… We essentially get the same specs as a PS4, with more TV capabilities, and nearly the same games.

Phil Fish is gone now. I’m actually kinda sad.

(Formerly on a different site)

If you don’t know, I hate Phil Fish. I hate his mutton chops. I hate his glasses. I hate his smug “better than you, more important you, now and forever” god complex he has going on. I have had several chances to just deck him at events and parties I’ve been at, and well, I should have. I disagreed with his opinions on just about everything. I hated the fact that he released Fez on Steam after talking smack all day about how PCs were glorified spreadsheet machines. I hated every section of Indie Game: The Movie he’s in, as if he reminded me of his self-centered “you’re not worthy of my works” attitude with every second of film.

The Death of Nintendo?

(Formerly on another site)

ZombiU was a commercial failure. Even with some Wii U’s being bundled with the game, it just didn’t sell. And despite being one of the more popular launch titles, Ubisoft has pretty much come out and said there won’t be a sequel. There’s no desire to even think about making one. This isn’t the only story of a third party developer not being pleased with the Wii U. Remember EA’s promise of a new and exciting partnership with Nintendo? Yeah, that kinda fizzled out into oblivion. Very few third parties, even Japanese ones, are coming to the Wii U with ports, let alone exclusives. Sure, there are still plans to release titles like Watch Dogs, a specialized version of Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, and more. And yes, exclusives like Bayonetta 2 are coming. And of course, we can’t forget the first party powerhouse games the house of Nintendo will bring to us. But is it enough to keep the struggling Wii U afloat?

I think y’all need to calm your yayas…

Odds are if you’re part of the cosplay community, you’ve probably read my scathing rant about Heroes of Cosplay on Nerd Junkies just kidding, it’s on here now. Your opinions on that piece probably range from “GREAT ARTICLE” to “well, I agree with you here, but disagree here” to “OMG YOU’RE JUST AS BAD AS THE TV SHOW THIS IS WHY WE CAN’T HAVE NICE THINGS”.

Good. Have an opinion. Be vocal about it. No matter what it may be in relation to mine.
